One of my favorite singer/songwriters. He includes some of his song lyrics and gives the backstory to them. For a songwriter like me, this was a very interesting way for him to tell his story.He also has a few sections retelling stories from the "old days" The reader also gets a healthy dose of Rick's sense of humor. Rick Roberts first book -- a great read especially if you love his songs.
In high school in the 70's I listened to The Flying Burrito Brothers and Firefall. My girlfriends and I were in my room listening to Just Remember I Love You. We were discussing who was the cutest guy in the band. We picked you out Rick as the cutest. We we're getting ready to go out to football game and dance after wards. My dads sister was visiting from Michigan. She had recognized your songs as we were playing them rather loud for our tiny little house. She said do you know who is in that band? Wondering why someone her age was interested . I said. Why? Was it to loud. She said no. Your dad and I both wanted to hear it. It's pretty good music. Even uncle Omar likes their music. (He is a retired policeman)Then she said. The leader of that band is your aunt Edna s grandson. After the discussion us girls just had we were silent for moment. Then my friend Violet said. Release. You have crush on your own cousin. I replied how was I supposed to know, I have never met my dad's sister Edna before only heard about her and they live almost in a different country. My dad then reminded me Florida is part of th USA. We are just on opposite coasts. My friends rubbed it for several weeks but I was okay with it. I reminded them they felt the same way I did and they were jealous cause I was related. Later I took up genealogy and curiosity got the best of me. I contacted you on Facebook. One hour later you responded. I was thrilled next thing I know we were talking on the phone for almost three hours.
After reading your book it gives me insight as to who you are. I am proud to say you are my cousin. I dedicated two pages to your career in my genealogy book. A section called who did what. (Along with president John Tyler and Theodore Gordon Ellyson. There are a couple from the civil war too. ) pretty cool huh? We need to chat about your copy. Call me.
In my book your right up there with Elvis.
Outstanding bio of the former singer and member of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the founder, singer and main songwriter for Firefall. He is a survivor who knew and performed with just about every West Coast singer or band in the 70's and 80's and has some wonderful heartwarming stories to share.

Rick Roberts book titled "Song Stories and Other Left-Handed Recollections" reads like a well balanced meal that I ate up! Funny Rock and Roll stories of life on the road and at home will make you laugh and keep you entertained, while the tasty smattering of song lyrics (beautifully written poetry) have such universally understood themes they will make you cry.
For those of you familiar with his songwriting success, we already knew Mr. Roberts could write! This Biography stands out among other Rock & Roll Author's work for too many reasons to list in this small space, but I will say the "Narrative Inquiry" style of writing he uses works increadibly well to balance his reflections about specific songs he wrote and song writing in general, and also provides the lucky reader with additional insights about life, love and amazing poetry!
A must for every Rick Roberts/Firefall/Flying Burrito Bros. fan as Rick relays the story behind a number of his classic songs. I do however suggest you read his other book, "Lame Brain" (see review) first as it add so much more to the stories about these songs and will impact on your impressions of them. It is always great to see books about members of two of the most overlooked bands in rock and roll history! and talk about great songs - Deliver Me, Sail Away, The Captain, Colorado, Four Days of Rain, Mexico, It Doesn't Matter, Only a Fool, Heading for a Fall and so many others.
In the mid 90s Ricky Roberts tried to make a revival of his R&R career with his "An Evening with the Composer " tour. Too bad he didn't have this book to guide him through that sorrowful attempt at a comeback. This book explains all the facts behind the creative compositions of Rick's songwriting from Flying Burrito Brothers to solo to Firefall to him as song contributor to Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, Chris Hillman, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Bad, etc. Without being a scandalous "tell all" Rick takes the fan on a remarkable sojourn through the 80s always building interest as he was moved by his Muse ( no pun intended David or Mary) to write the next earmark of our lives. I suppose since Rick never took music composition you'll have to forgive him for not including the notes and written score. It would have been a big aid to the younger fledgling Rock Stars of tomorrow who would do well to cover Mr. Roberts' ballads & lullabies.
